so i get some people asking me about the programs i use and i just reply with "painter". now it has come to me that reply is a little misleading and might get some people into some trouble like i am right now. so read the following copy and paste i found on the painterfactory forum, it pretty much sums it all up.

"As I have often said, Painter IX.5 is the best - in the sense of reliability - of all the Painter versions to date.  Prior versions were obviously evolutionary stages and it would seem that the apex was just about reached in version X.1.  From IX.5 onwards the trend appears to be downward.  New versions appear to be prompted more by financial pressures than any achieved improvements.  Perhaps it needs to be that way if Painter is to be kept alive in the Corel setting.  To me it seems quite evident that the developers' lack of creative (Painter) expertise - and possibly even imagination - does not augur well for a successful version 12, if this is ever to come to anything.   My advice to anyone contemplating an upgrade from IX.5 and X.1 - don't.  Enjoy and improve your competence in working with your current versions and stop dreaming about an ideal Painter which is never going to happen."

now i know painter 10 and 11 has worked great for some people, Ryan Church uses 10, BUT i would advise you not to take any chances, if you have the option to learn PS or painter, i would strongly recommend going for PS as that is the industry standard and painter has a HUGE compatibility issue with 32 bit system, 64 bit system, vista, XP, 7, Mac... just about every fucking thing out there!.

it's a bit late for me right now as i have only tried to paint with PS a few times and i hated it, and right now i'm in a bit of of a shit with the IT department at work because the work place can only offer painter 11 or PS and using painter 11 is like playing a online game with a dial up connection.

that being said, painter is a great program when it's not lagging or crashing and it does offer an one of a kind digital painting experience.

I used to have Painter and really enjoyed it -- except all my paintings ended up being really small, because if I worked on a large canvas the computer would crash. It's a shame, but also a curse of trying to mimic real media.

I felt this way about painter in like 2005, even with modern computers with over 8gb ram and dedicated graphics cards this is still an issue? how disappointing ._.

Oh and btw, there were a few initial problems with Painter 11 on my Win7 -64 box, but once the first update was released it's been solid. But that experience is a big part of why I'm hesitant to upgrade...

Yep, Painter is the one for realism/realistic media. I love it! But I've been using it since version 6 or 7 or something like that. I've had issues with ever recent release and am currently hesitant to spend more money on 12... :(

Ugh I know this feeling all too well. Took the plunge with Painter 12 (my very first Corel product) needless to say I wanted my money back almost instantly. I am now using SKB Pro almost exclusively and the latest version of that seems to do what I wanted painter for in the first place.

The experience has been so bad with painter that I did not learn to optimize it for my system until some random deviant shared some setting tweaks with me. Even so the nail was in the coffin, I rarely open Painter 12 nowadays. I too would second the vote here and encourage anyone out there to avoid Painter 12 like the plague. It is not worth the 300 bucks Corel charges and it definitely wont get you anywhere other than to Corel videos on Youtube of people painting over photographs.

Its interesting that Painter still has the problems that it does. Kind of sad really that they are not making the advances they should with the software. That said you really should check out the latest version of PS along with the brushes my friend Alp Altiner has created for it. He uses both painter and PS but now with the new brush engine in PS he cant paint the same way in PS as he did in Painter.
And as far as Ryan Church, he uses both, back and forth. I just worked with him and it all depends on what he is working on that determines which one he uses. I would say dont limit yourself to one tool. I have both and use both although PS is the main one these days.

Just curious man, what is your job exactly? Also thanks for the advice. I use PS and have only messed around with painter a couple of times. I'd like to just focus on my skills getting better before I tried learning how to use another program though.
